1. Find a White Towel
The only piece of equipment that you’ll need to perform this quick and easy check is a white towel or rag. You’ll want it to be white so that you can clearly see the color of the transmission fluid. It’s also a good idea to keep your owner’s manual on hand in case you need it.
2. Get the Engine Warm
It’s best to check the transmission fluid when your car has been running for a few minutes, allowing the fluid to warm up and expand so that you can get an accurate reading. Keep the engine running throughout the process of your check so that the fluid stays warm, but be sure that the car is in park!
3. Pop the Hood & Locate the Transmission Dipstick
Raise the hood of the car and look inside. Can’t find the transmission dipstick? Whip out that owner’s manual and you’ll be able to quickly locate the correct spot to find the stick.
4. Check Fluid Health
Once you’ve pulled the dipstick from the car, give it a thorough wipe on your white towel. Take a look at the color and consistency of the fluid, and you’ll get a great sense of its condition. Here’s what to look for:
- Color: Healthy fluid will be anywhere from red to light brown in color, while unhealthy fluid will appear dark brown or black.
- Consistency: Thick, viscous fluid is a sign that you need a change, and even worse than that is fluid that’s floating with dirty debris.
- Smell: Don’t get up close and take a big whiff, but if you detect a burnt smell from the fluid, it’s likely in need of a change.
5. Check Fluid Level
Reinsert that dipstick and pull it back out for a second inspection. Your dipstick has a couple lines along its length to indicate your fluid level. If your fluid measures below the lower line, you’ll need a top-up in order to keep your engine performing at its best.
